چکیده

Chloramphenicol is known to inhibit protein synthesis in different microorganisms without affecting the syntheses of nucleic acids (Gale and Folkes, 1953; Wisseman et al., 1954; Aronson and Spiegelman, 1958). Harold and Ziporin (1958) and Drakulic and Errera (1959) reported that the treatment of Escherichia coli with chloramphenicol immediately after ultraviolet irradiation prevented the resumption of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) synthesis. Doudney and Haas (1958) showed that a considerable recovery of colony forming ability in ultraviolet irradiated E. coli strain B occurred after irradiation in the absence of nitrogen source or in the presence of chloramphenicol. A similar observation was reported by Gillies and Alper (1959). Contrary to such observations, a different response to the same antibiotic was encountered when one employed several other strains of E. coli; the ultraviolet irradiated bacteria may die when they are held in media containing chloramphenicol. The nature and the mechanism of this phenomenon is the subject of this paper.

Effect of Electron Beam Irradiation on Survival of Escherichia coli O157:H7 and Salmonella enterica serovar Thyphimurium in Minced Camel Meat during Refrigerated Storage

Background: Electron beam irradiation is one of the effective ways to control food-borne pathogens. We evaluated the effect of electron beam irradiation on survival of Escherichia coli O157:H7 and Salmonella enterica serovar Thyphimurium in minced camel meat during refrigerated storage. Methods: The meat samples were inoculated with E. coli O157:H7 and S. enterica serovar Thyphimurium and then...

Photocatalytic Removal of Escherichia Coli by ZnO Activated by Ultraviolet-C Light from Aqueous Solution

Abstract: Background and objectives: There is a great interest in photocatalytic oxidation of contaminants, using ZnO, in recent years. The main objective of this research was to study photocatalytic disinfection of E. coli bacteria as water microbial pollution index, using nano particles of ZnO and a UV lamp in a batch reactor. Material and Methods: In this study, the contaminated water sample...

Role of Pyridine Nucleotides in the Control of Respiration in Ultraviolet-Irradiated Escherichia coli B/r Cells.

Escherichia coli B/r cells grown on glycerol-containing medium and irradiated with ultraviolet light to about 1% survival respire for about 1 hr and then cease completely for several hours. The results of studies on cell-free respiration and analyses of pyridine nucleotide levels at various times after ultraviolet irradiation show that the cessation of respiration is associated with two changes...

Sperm fertilization capacity of Caspian salmon, Salmo trutta caspius under ultraviolet irradiation

The optimum dose of ultraviolet (UV) irradiation to produce gynogenetic Caspian salmon, Salmo trutta caspius, with emphasis on the "Hertwig effect" and photoreactivation (PR) were investigated. The sperm of Caspian salmon was irradiated with UV at 2010 ? 200 ?w.cm-2 in different times including 0, 1, 3, 5, 8, 10, 15, 20, 25, 35 and 45 min and was allowed to fertilize normal ova; the fertilizati...

Inactivation of membrane transport in Escherichia coli by near-ultraviolet light.

Evidence is presented that near-ultraviolet (near-UV) light can alter galactoside transport in Escherichia coli in several independent ways. It can inactivate the permease system per se, it can interfere with metabolic energy production or transfer, and it can cause an increase in the generalized permeability of the membrane. Earlier publications suggested that near-UV destroys cofactors needed...
